Command Sergeant Major Janell K. Ray is a native of Fort Hood, Texas. She enlisted in the Army in May 1992 as a 91J, Physical Therapy Specialist, converting to a 68W, Combat Medic, with N9 Additional Skill Identifier (ASI), in 1997. She attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
CSM Ray has served in leadership positions from Clinic NCOIC to First Sergeant and Command Sergeant Major. She has performed duties as a Physical Therapy NCOIC, Instructor/Writer, Physical Therapy Specialist Program NCOIC, Surgery Department NCOIC, Operations NCO, Emergency Medicine Department NCOIC, Senior Operations NCO, Division Surgeon Sergeant Major, and MEDDAC Command Sergeant Major.
CSM Ray’s stateside assignments include United States Institute of Surgical Research (Burn Center), Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Army Medical Department Center and School, Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Winn Army Community Hospital, Fort Stewart, Georgia; 21st Combat Support Hospital, Fort Hood, Texas; Madigan Army Medical Center, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York; and most recently at USA MEDDAC Fort Knox and Ireland Army Health Clinic, Fort Knox, Kentucky. Her overseas assignments include United States Army Health Clinic, Baumholder, Germany. CSM Ray has deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation New Dawn (OND).
CSM Ray’s military education includes all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development System, Instructor Training Course, Small Group Instructor Training Course, Battle Staff NCO Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, Basic Anti-terrorism Officer Course, First Sergeant’s Course, Master Resilience Trainer Course, the Senior Enlisted Professional Joint Military Education Course, the AMEDD and Battalion Pre-Command Courses, and the AMEDD Executive Skills Course. CSM Ray is also a graduate of the Sergeant’s Major Course Class 65. Her civilian education includes an Associate in Applied Science degree from St Philip’s College, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern Kentucky University, and she is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice with Excelsior College.
CSM Ray’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (7th Award), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (5th Award), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Superior Unit Award (2nd Award), Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), National Defense Service Ribbon w/1 Bronze Star, Iraqi Campaign Medal w/2 Bronze Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 5), Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Ribbon (Numeral 2). She is also a recipient of the Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3).
CSM Ray is married to Christopher J. Ray. They have three children, Tiara, Dominic, and Isabella.
